NEOGEN Code 9 Gold Black Caviar Essence &
Gold Tox Tightening Pack Kit Review
I first heard of this unique product during one of many middle of the night YouTube binge watching the sessions and looking up information about K-Beauty. When I started to read more about the benefits of this product and how much people loved this I had to get it asap.
One particular thing I personally enjoyed, is it makes me feel like I’m a professional skincare mixologist! You get to mix part one with part two, then put it in the fridge and voila I have a product that is unlike anything I’ve ever tried.
About this product
Apart from the preparation side of this product and that makes this so unique, is that it’s a multi beneficial treatment in a single use. It is a facial treatment (due to the essence) and a mild exfoliation (between ingredients and the pads). It claims to improve skin firming, skin texture, skin elasticity and skin hydration.
Niacinamide – assists with treating ageing skin, acne, and dry skin
Collagen – an essential to help with elasticity, health and appearance of your skin
Sodium Hyaluronate – aka Hylauronic Acid (my soul mate ingredient!). Helps to secure skin’s moisture and creates the appearance of more youthful skin
Once combined, works together to plump, hydrate and brightening skin.
Gold Black Caviar Essence – Part One
A main and most important part of this kit is this little bottle of liquid goodness – the Gold Black Caviar Essence. Some of the visual standouts for me is the gold flecks that float around as part of the thick essence.
The essence contains over 70 ingredients, is very thick and seems very concentrated. It is the thickest essence I believe I have ever seen. In regards to the scent, it is very citrusy, strong lemon but also has a chemical smell mixed into it. It does tend to linger once applied but I can handle the scent and usually I am very sensitive to heavily fragranced products.
Patented Pads – Part 2
The pads are patented gold thread lifting pads. From my understanding, this is something that makes this product that much more special and unlike anything in the market.
These are two sided pads, one side is a rough gauze like texture and the other side is a quilted pillow like texture. The gauze side exfoliates and also helps to further penetrate the essence deeper into the skin. It gently captures dirt and dead skin cells.
The quilted side is the section you use to pat and/or swipe the essence.
If you have ever tried the pads from Neogen Bio-Peel Gauze (Wine/Green Tea/Lemon) they are very similar in the style.
They have 3 layers that make the exfoliating process very soft and gentle: one layer of 100% cotton gauze, a second layer of cushion pad and the third layer is embossed. This allows the product to go smoothly and softly on the skin, trapping the dead skin cells and impurities in the embossed layer of the pad. (source: Neogen Lab)
Whats in the box
There are 5 pieces that come in the one kit.
- Black jar, that is the main jar that houses this product after mixing together. It’s very sturdy, hard plastic. I will definitely be re-purposing this jar once the product has finished.
- A long pair of tweezers that are used to pull out the pads. This is great for people who worry about contamination by using your fingers to pull out the product.
- A fitted stand that holds the black jar and also a slot to store the tweezers making it easy to keep everything together,
- Pack of pads, I believe there are 30 pads.
- The orange jar full of essence. It’s pre measured to fill the black jar with the pads and the essence. Once you combine the essence into the black jar with the pads you no longer need this bottle.
Upon unboxing the items from the box everything comes separately. The essence formula is kept in the orange container on its own and the pads are sealed in a package inside the main black jar. Prior to being ready to use you unpack the pads and pour the essence into the black jar and refrigerate overnight.
On a side note, after preparation of this product, you have 2 months to use this up.
Neogen Bio-Peels vs Neogen Code9 Packs
The bio-peels are a simplified version of the Code9 Packs. It focuses more on manual exfoliation combined with a formula that delivers a natural chemical peel function. After using the pads, you need to rinse off the remaining product from your face.
The Code9 Packs are designed to exfoliate and combined with the natural ingredient formula further delivers skin treatment benefits. After using the pads, it is intended to be left on to further absorb into the skin. No need to rinse off.

Fast Forward Overnight
After marinating in the fridge for 12 hours, the essence really thickens the pads up. I was surprised by the way this product really changes by simply putting it in the fridge.
When I initially mixed the essence in with the pads it was really bubbly but now it’s really thick and each pad is drenched excessively in essence.
I only had to put it in the fridge for the initial preparation and then kept it under my bathroom counter. You can store it in the fridge and only take it out when you use it. I didn’t go down that route since I’ve been using it throughout Melbourne’s winter so it stays cool.
What the pads look like after the preparation period
Each pad is dripping in essence, making it very easy to glide along the skin without causing any scratching during the exfoliation phase.
These two pictures of the pad was the first pad from the pile I took out after refrigeration. Unfortunately, the picture didn’t capture how saturated the pad is with essence. In the demo video, I have included, you might be able to see it clearer especially since the demo is towards the end of the jar.
The ingredients list is huge on this, some people may like them and some not so much. It contains alcohol, which can be off putting for some and also lots of fruit extracts. Personally, I am not very particular about ingredients so the alcohol doesn’t bother me.
How I use
The way I’ve been using it now and it’s solely for the purpose of using the product up within the two month period. After I have double cleansed my skin, I go through with a pad, rough texture first moving in a circular motion and then flip it around to the softer side and rotate between patting it in and also swiping it around to help the essence absorb.
I let it dry for a few minutes and then apply a wash off mask. Usually, I save it for a clay mask so it helps not to overly dry the mask and prevents it from cracking and avoid that ‘I can’t move my face’ feeling.
This is mainly used during my daily pm skincare routine.
Whilst this product is unique and very well packaged I didn’t find it very beneficial for my skin. I tried using it a number of several ways, a couple of days per week and also daily.
One of the things I didn’t like about this is the residue it left on my skin. It seems to happen to me whenever I use jelly like products and it doesn’t seem to absorb into my skin, it just sits there.
Come to think of it, I seem to have a lot of this same issue with Neogen products. I don’t know if maybe it’s user error (which is very likely) or some of Neogen’s products don’t work well with my skin.
No, I don’t plan to purchase this product again. I am happy I tried it because it’s a learning curve for me and what does or doesn’t work my skin.
There is also another version of this kit that I have and will review that in the future.
I purchased this kit, along with my other Neogen products through YesStyle when they had a sale on late last year.
There are many people who really love this kit and swear by it, but for me, it’s a no go. The concept and everything involved in this product is fun but it’s not efficient for my skin.
Have you used this product or something similar? I would love to hear your opinions on your experience using these types of products.
