PMD – Personal Microderm Pro Review
I love trying facial and body devices almost as much as I love trying skincare products. Strong emphasis on almost. There is a flood of devices out there that promise to offer you similar results that you could get from a professional treatment.
Some devices work, some not so much, and some not at all! You may have done some research on products, read or seen some bad outcomes and of course some total time and money wasters. Of course there is the diamonds in the rough that are really awesome! Whether it may be user error, not appropriate for certain skin types, the product backfires or just flat out doesn’t work. Whatever the case may be I knew I had to try the PMD device as soon as I heard about it.
If you are not aware my skin is oily, acne prone and lots of acne scars, the type of scars that are deeply indented. With that said I know I require a more aggressive approach.
By going to get a professional microdermabrasion treatment, it can be pretty costly depending on the amount of treatments required. With the state of my skin I would need like 5 million treatments! Which I will need to work 8 full time jobs, sell my car and hire out my 2 dogs to do professional manual labour like digging holes, to afford professional microdermabrasion.
What the PMD device is
The Pro version has 2 different settings. The lower setting is ideal for a more sensitive approach. I would really recommend starting on this setting when you first start.
I used the lower setting for a long time before I mustered up the courage to kick it up a notch.
Even now that I have used my PMD for over 6 months I still use the lower setting when I start a new disc. I also use it a couple of times when I upgrade to a courser disc. It’s a way for me to get comfortable with the new disc and avoid me risking sanding off my face!
The device basically lightly suctions your skin and exfoliates the dead skin. It’s not painful at all, it leaves me a little red after a session but it goes away very quickly.
What is in the box
I ordered the Pro version because at the time I could only purchase through the US, which would mean a US plugin.
This set includes the device, a super long cord, instruction manual with a DVD and some disks.
- 1 x PMD Personal Microderm Pro
- 1 x Electrical Power Cord
- 1 x Body Cap
- 1 x Facial cap
- 2 x Blue discs
- 2 x Green discs
- 2 x Red discs
- 1 x White training disc
- 1 x Reusable filter
- Instructional DVD and Manual
The white training disc is great to practice and get you comfortable with the device. It helps to get use to holding the device, how to glide it across your skin etc. You would use this on your arm so you can test how your skin reacts to the device. It’s a smooth disc and doesn’t actually exfoliate.
Types of devices
There are a few PMD devices you can choose from depending on your needs and budget.
There is a male version, that is designed specifically for a man’s skin to help reduce enlarged pores and eliminate in-grown hairs. Men can use the other devices as well since men may have sensitive skin as well.
Some of the devices offer one setting and come with the classic caps . The Pro version has 2 speeds and both of the caps are smooth – glide versions.
The Classic cap is from the orginal series and have a crystal like look.
The Smooth-glide caps are meant to offer extra comfort, and glide with along your skin easier.
If you have one of the original devices you can purchase the smooth-glide cap(s) if you’d like as the caps work on all PMD devices. This is a way to upgrade your device without shelling out the cash for a new device.
The international PMD Pro comes with the multiple plugins so you can take it with you when you are traveling. The multiple plugins cover from 110 volts to 220 and 230 volts. All you need to do is clip in the correct plugin for your country and away you go.
This may be a major selling point for some users. The first benefit that comes to mind is it’s convenience. Personally it’s always hard to purchase an international type of electrical device because it’s a small hassle to buy a a converter. Admittedly it’s small hassle but after the zillion extra fees you have to pay for shipping/custom fees etc you want to just plugin and go.
The other benefit is if you travel you already have it set up to go. Personally, I always get nervous to use converter for extended use of products because I don’t know if I’ll blow the outlet up! That’s my paranoia just overthinking it!
Good news, if you already have one of the original devices and would like to have the international option you can purchase the international plugin set through the website. It’s not very expensive. Again, great option to upgrade your device’s functionally without shelling out the major bucks.
You can also see the cord is super long. You do need to have this plugged in while using, it’s not portable. When I use mine I can move around my bathroom quite comfortably without worrying around the cord.
You have a few options in the different sets of discs kits. I purchased 3 packs of the Advanced Kit and it contains one small and one big of the following:
• Very Course
Details of the kits are listed further down this post
The small disc is for your face and goes with the smaller cap. The large disc is for your body and goes with the larger cap.
You can use the discs between 2 to 4 times before disposing of the disc. I usually use one disc three to four times before moving on to a new disc.
I recently started using the Red disc, red is the strongest for your face and I have been able to use it 4 times before replacing it. I could definitely feel the difference using the stronger disc versus the previous disc I was using.
Details of the discs are listed further down this post
How I use the device
I really try to use this about once a week, sometimes I go longer without using it. There is no reason for it other than me being slack. It doesn’t take long to do, probably about 5 minutes.
I wash my face and make sure it’s totally dry before I use the device. Afterwards I put a gentle toner and use a hyaluronic acid sheetmask. Then top it off with a good moisturiser.
When I purchased the device I also purchased the skincare set PMD does and I will do a review about it soon.
I can’t comment on how it’d work on my body because I haven’t tried it yet. But I think it’d be good to see how it performs on my elbows, the heels of my feet and anywhere else I need some extra exfoliation.
How I clean the device after use
After use I unplug the device, remove the cap and filter. I rinse the filter with warm water while gently squeezing the water out. Then use a rubbing alcohol drenched cotton pad and wipe down the inside and around the opening of the cap.
I see there are a lot of flakes of dead skin so I want to make sure I really sanitize the heck out of the cap.
After I have done all these steps I leave the filter and cap out to air dry overnight on my bathroom counter.
I have seen very little results in particular my acne scars. Before I purchased the device I watched a lot of YouTube videos and read blog posts and there have been some people with great results.
Maybe if I had used the device on a regular basis my results may be better? Maybe now that I have started using a stronger disc my results be better? Either way I have felt I’ve gotten my money worth. I would much prefer this type of exfoliation instead of a manually exfoliation. That’s just my personal preference for my skin. I also enjoy chemical exfoliation over manual.
Whilst I haven’t seen the results I expected I love the feeling it gives me after use. When I apply the rest of my skincare products I can really feel my products sinking into my skin. In my mind I see that as a win because if my skincare products get a chance to really get in there and do their magic then I’m reaping rewards.
If you have milder acne problems than I do then this may work wonders for you.
Would I repurchase?
Yes! I will say that I wouldn’t purchase this at it’s full price. I highly recommend if you are planning to purchase this device sign up for their newsletter. They constantly offer great savings of a certain percentage off, a free gift of a full sized pricey skincare line, or purchase one device and get the Men’s device for free.
Have you tried the PMD device? Or been curious about it? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments section below.
